At Brownsburg Dental Professionals, PC, we're not just capable of helping you achieve a better-looking smile as family dentists and cosmetic dentists - we can help you achieve a better-smelling smile as well! One of the leading oral problems happens to be bad breath. Now, this isn't a problem that can be pinpointed to a specific cause - there's actually plenty of reasons why a person's breath may end up smelling bad. Next time you think your breath is a little off or you get an unkind message from a stranger about the smell coming from your mouth, think about the following reasons for causes of bad breath - it's probably one of them!

Food

Food is one of the leading causes of bad breath. After you eat certain foods, their particles that are left in your mouth will begin to breakdown, increase the bacteria, and start to emit a foul smell. Some foods are much more likely to cause bad breath, such as garlic, dairy products, and onions.

Bad Hygiene

Maintaining proper brushing habits is vital in cleansing your teeth of the food particles and bacteria that can lead to bad breath. Daily brushing and flossing will help get rid of these odor-emitting food particles and keep you from developing gum disease.

Dry Mouth

Saliva naturally helps clean your mouth of food particles and bacteria that can cause bad odors. However, when you have dry mouth, your saliva production is limited. Dry mouth often occurs while we sleep, which is why it's common for people to have bad breath when they wake up in the morning.

Mouth Infections

Having mouth infections can also cause your breath to smell bad. Some of these mouth infections can include cavities, gum disease, and impacted teeth. This is just one more reason for you to pay close attention to your daily oral hygiene routine.

Smoking

This one's a given! Not only does smoking create an unpleasant odor, but it can also lead to gum disease - another potential cause of bad breath!
